In August of 1980, 48 residents of Kingston, Jamaica were officially installed as Optimists. The Optimist Club of Kingston immediately became part of the Florida district, Jamaica’s closest Optimist neighbor. This was the organization’s first step in a successful Caribbean expansion project.

The first youth convention took place in 1988 and was the beginning of Junior Optimist Octagon International.
