Community Programs

The Bixby Optimist Club is involved in many activities throughout the year both for the community and local schools. In order to fund all of these important and special projects, the Bixby Optimist Club hosts the annual Green Corn Festival as the primary fund raising event. Here are just a few of the annual activities that we sponsor, host, or are involved in!


  • High School Student of the Month: Each month, four Bixby High School students are recognized as Students of the Month.
  • Respect for Law: Annually, we honor Bixby law enforcement officials that demonstrate exemplary community service.


  • Youth scholarships: The Bixby Optimist Club awards over $10,000 in annual scholarships to Seniors at Bixby High School, as well as one scholarship awarded to a Senior at Liberty High School.
  • Miss Bixby Scholarship Pageant: A local tradition since 1975, this pageant is open to girls 16-19 years of age living in the Bixby, Liberty and Leonard school districts. While not part of the Miss Oklahoma pageant system, Miss Bixby represents the Bixby community and the Bixby Optimist Club throughout the year by participating in a variety of events and promotions.


  • Salvation Army Bell Ringing: Each year, volunteers from the club man a kettle for one day during December to raise money for the Salvation Army.
  • Shoe Drive


  • Youth Fishing Derby: This free fishing tournament is held for 2-15 year olds, including food and prizes! A popular and fun event for those that volunteer as well as those that fish, this derby is held annually (typically in May or June) at Lake Bixhoma.
  • Youth Appreciation Lunch: Each year, the Optimist Club and local businesses sponsor a special event that recognizes the top high school seniors that demonstrate leadership in Bixby Public Schools.
  • Foster Children Christmas Party: Each December, volunteers bring food, Santa and gifts for foster children and their foster parents living in the Bixby area.
  • StaySAFE : Each year, the Optimist Club hosts a community child safety fair that will help parents, grandparents and children get important information on how best to protect their children. Featured programs include Police, Fire & EMSA who will be supervising tours of their safety vehicles, fingerprinting, water safety, Internet Safety, gun safety, and a vehicle rollover simulator along with child safety seat checks and free safety equipment (such as bicycle helmets, smoke detectors & DNA kits) given to attendees.


  • Essay Contest: This contest presents Bixby youth the opportunity to write about their opinions regarding the world in which they live.
  • Oratorical Contest: This contest allows Bixby school youth to gain experience in public speaking on a pre-assigned topic and if qualified, to participate at the district and state levels of competition for scholarships.


  • Charley Young Park: Through the years, the Bixby Optimist Club has made many improvements since 1975, including: construction of the gazebo, installation of drinking fountains, tree plantings, installation of decorative lights, Charley Young Park Ball Team wood carvings.
  • Washington Irving Memorial Park and Arboretum: Through the years, the Bixby Optimist Club has assisted in manpower or funding aid for various projects in this park.


  • Through the years, the Bixby Optimist Club has helped send local students to contests, special trips and other activities through financial support and aid. These include Bixby High School Band and Choir, MJROTC, Every 15 Minutes, after school programs and others.


  • Through the years, the Bixby Optimist Club has helped a variety of disadvantaged children and youth, through eye glasses, buddy dogs, Special Olympics, computer printers and other special requests.
